mace warrior

A fantasy painting of a female warrior holding a large mace, amongst battling knights.

This is the first large scale acrylic painting I ever did. I wanted a larger than life warrior figure in the center, surrounded by a pitched battle between yellow and red clad knights.

the process

step 1: the sketch

Still early on in figuring out my painting process, the only preliminary work I did for this painting was a very rough pencil sketch of the main figure’s pose. I thought “good enough!” and painstakingly translated it to a 16”x20” illustration board by eye. I ended up erasing and redrawing the entire figure when I realized she wasn’t centered in the composition.

step 2: paint

Once I had my pencils finalized on the board, I went over the lines in technical pen, and established the lights and darks in black acrylic washes. Then I painted over it all with a raw umber wash to unify the values a bit. From there I just painted colors that seemed to make sense to me, working background to foreground.
